Dr. Maria Rago

Dr.  Maria Rago is a clinical psychologist in Naperville, IL. She has been the clinical director of eating disorders services at Linden Oaks Hospital at Edwards for the last 10 years, helping to make the program a national leader.

She helped the Eating Disorders Program launch the innovative Arabella House, a residential group home for eating disorders, 4 years ago. These programs have won the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation: Gold Seal of Approval.

Dr. Rago is clinical director and founder of Rago and Associates Counseling Services, with offices in Naperville, Geneva and New Lenox, IL. She has been doing individual, family and group therapy for the last 25 years. Dr. Ragos is currently the National Vice President of ANAD (Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders).

This year her first book came out entitled, Shut Up, Skinny Bitches! The title is in response to the New York Times Best-selling book, Skinny Bitch, which tried to glamorize thinness and put down people of all sizes, and encouraged people not to eat very much. She wrote the book with York High School classmate, Greg Archer.

Dr. Rago has appeared across national and local media, including appearances on Fox News Live, with Brian Wilson and the Today Show. She was Prevention Magazine Health Hero for March of 2010, and appeared in Prevention’s 2010 Calendar. She won a “good eating” award from the Chicago Tribune in 2010.

Dr. Rago speaks out against the culture we live in, which encourages us to hate our bodies and to be afraid of food. She hopes to help changes occur where people can feel good about eating all foods in moderation and to love their bodies at all shapes and sizes.

The first night her book was released she and Greg received an email from a young man who reported that after he finished the book, he had felt comfortable eating his dinner that night for the first time in years. Well, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?
